Cleaning up Dorval shores

Dorval shorelines are a little cleaner these days, thanks to the hard work of the Strathmore Scouts on Oct. 1.

The scouts did their part to clean up the public shores on Dixie Island, Millenium Park, Pine Beach Park and Valois Bay as part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. The team cleared 894 cigarette butts, 1,228 pieces of Styrofoam, 30 feet of plastic netting and one tire with its rim attached.

Equipment for the cleanup was donated by the City of Dorval. The scouts were inspired to take part in the shoreline tidying by a desire to help the wildlife, and the shoreline beauty they feel lucky to have. The initiative also aims to bring attention to the need to respect the environment by not littering in water and sewer ways.

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup originated in Vancouver, B.C. in 1994. Last year, nearly 60,000 teams cleared more than 2,000 shorelines—or 3,000 kilometres—across Canada, removing nearly 180,000 kilograms of trash.
