“Many Quebecers are concerned about housing problems in our community,” said Isabelle Morin. “While housing is becoming scarce, the cost of rent continues to rise. The root of the problem is that household incomes can no longer keep up with the rising cost of living.”
The NDP put forward measures that could be adopted immediately to address the problem. We must first release new funds to build more affordable housing, because what we have currently is not enough.
“By improving access to housing, the government would be giving a much needed boost to many Quebecers,” said Marie-Claude Morin, Official Opposition Housing critic. “But we want to develop these ideas and ensure that they adhere to your daily reality. This is why we’d like to get your comments. Come meet with us and tell us how you want the federal government to be involved in housing.”
Canada is the only industrialized country without a national housing strategy. Affordable housing needs are more significant for single-parent families (25.7%), Aboriginals (20.4%) and immigrants (18.2%). An estimated 150,000 to 300,000 Canadians are homeless.
