Isabelle Morin opposes cuts to old age security

‘‘To tell older people that their old age pension is going to be delayed by two years, that is not only disappoiting news but it has serious implications. It is not right to prevent people who worked hard their whole lives from living in dignity.’’

New Democrat Leader Nycole Turmel met recently with representatives of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) to discuss ways in which seniors will be affected by proposed cuts to Old Age Security and to find ways to oppose it.

“Seniors simply can’t trust this government,” said Turmel. “While 250,000 seniors are living in poverty, Stephen Harper is going to make it more difficult for people to retire with dignity. This is simply unacceptable.”

The meeting was an opportunity to explore the consequences of the government’s proposed cuts to Old Age Security and to discuss ways in which seniors can protect themselves.

“The Conservatives distributed $1.4 billion in corporate tax cuts last year, and now they say there’s no money left for pensions,” said Turmel. “Their priorities really aren’t in the right place, and it’s seniors who will pay.”
