John Abbott College honours one of its own

After a process nearly three years in the making, John Abbott College can proudly say that the new addition to its campus, a state-of-the-art science and technologies building, is now complete. Though construction finished some time ago, one thing was missing to truly call it whole: a name.

On April 24, 2013, it was officially announced that the new building would be henceforth known as the Anne-Marie Edward Science Building. This was announced by Joanne Simoneau-Polenz, Chairperson of the John Abbott College Board of Governors in a ceremony which included Anne-Marie’s parents, family members and friends as well as John Abbott College faculty and staff.

Anne-Marie graduated from John Abbott College in Pure & Applied Science in December 1988. Like in all facets of her life, she embraced her time at Abbott, immersing herself not only in her studies but in clubs, Student Congress and sports teams alike. Nothing was beyond her reach.

On December 6, 1989, Anne-Marie’s life was tragically cut short in the horrific events that took place at École Polytechnique de l’Université de Montréal alongside 13 innocent women. She was an engineering student, about to embark on specialized studies in chemical engineering.

“We are proud to have the Anne-Marie Edward Science Building as yet another milestone in John Abbott College history” noted Director General Ginette Sheehy, adding that “each of our buildings on Campus is named after a noteworthy Canadian and we feel that Anne-Marie is certainly a fitting and inspirational addition to this list. It is our hope that Anne-Marie’s memory will live on, not only in our minds and hearts, but also in the landscape of the College that was once her own.”
