Where to find a little Middle East in your plate

Middle Eastern food is becoming more and more trendy everywhere around the world. Healthy and fresh ingredients, as well as the success of such chefs as Yotam Ottolenghi and his Jerusalem cookbook, have all contributed in propelling the cuisine of the Middle East into the limelight. Montreal is lucky to have quite a large sample of excellent restaurants from all around the Middle East. Here are a few of my favourites.

Damas

The one-thousand-and-one-night inspired decor at Damas instantly transports the diner to a far away exotic land. Everything here is delicious so pick from the array of Syrian mezes (tapas) or delve into the delectable house specialties.

BarBounya and Restaurant Su

Turkish restaurants BarBounya or Su are both helmed by chef Fisun Ercan. Su serves traditional Turkish food including mezes and main dishes while BarBounya is a mezes bar with emphasis on small Mediterranean-inspired dishes that are meant to be shared. They also both serve a traditional brunch spread.

Kazamaza

Kazamaza serves some of the best Lebanese food in Montreal in a contemporary space in the heart of the Mile End. The fattoush salad with crunchy fresh vegetables, crispy pita bread chips and a tangy sweet dressing is an absolute must. Try the cherry kebabs and the delicious omelette with kawarma (lamb confit) served at brunch.

Sumac

Located in Saint-Henri, this bustling spot serves Middle-Eastern inspired dishes such as great falafels and delicious kefta made with the freshest ingredients and served with their homemade pita bread. Whatever else you may order, you must try the garlic labneh with dukka, fresh mint and paprika oil.
