Cuts to employment measures: “Outrageous”, says Morin

“Conservatives are cutting measures which guarantee Canadians decent wages, says New Democrat MP Isabelle Morin (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Lachine). Cuts to measures regarding employment and employment-insurance found in the budget are “outrageous” towards immigrants and their families.

“A recent study shows that people who have a name associated to a foreign origin have a 64% less chance to be called for a job interview. This is why the federal government had established measures to ensure equality in the recruitment process. Unfortunately, these measures soon will be history thanks to the conservative budget”, says Isabelle Morin.

Mrs. Morin is also worried about the measures that will make considerable changes to employment-insurance eligibility and benefits. Canadians who intend to apply for EI benefits will now be forced to take a job that pays only 70% of their original salary. The government de facto forces Canadians to accept salary cuts if they want to be eligible for EI.

“Workers could be forced to take a 30% wage cut. If they are laid off again, they get another 30% wage cut. Will the government agree to base future EI claims on the workers’ original wages? The Conservatives are putting Canadians into a downward spiral of lower wages and reduced eligibility” concluded Isabelle Morin.
