Meet the teachers and General Assemblies: Terry Fox runs this week

Well as they say, the 2012-13 school year is off and running and welcome back everybody to another year of learning and this in our 11th season. A year that we could have a major media announcement to the benefit of the Montreal education beat and the Montreal high school sports scene as well. So stay tuned.

Governing Board Elections

All schools in Quebec, according to the Education Act, must call a general assembly of parents by September 30th to elect parent representatives to the Governing Board. Failure to do so means the school Principals take over the duties of the GB’s.

The past few weeks saw our three Verdun schools have their annual Assemblies coupled with the Meet the Teacher or Curriculum evenings. These evenings also give the chance for parents to get an idea of what to expect and what’s expected of them for the year.

First off this year was Riverview, where they also held a now famous annual corn roast with all the goodies in a spirit of school togetherness. There were two openings for two-year terms up for grabs with five parents being nominated and Miss Pascale Matte was re-elected, along with newcomer Miss Natasha Ralph.

The following evening was the turn of Verdun Elementary and for new Principal Miss Jennifer Kurta; it was a chance to introduce herself to the parents in attendance. There were 4 positions open this year, including one for a –year term, which saw Miss Jennifer Dezon acclaimed for that spot. One new parent, Miss Lisa Roy, was elected for a two year term, along with returnees, Miss Tracy Somerville and Mylene Allard.

Beurling Academy was the final one on the list with their evening last Thursday. There were 5 openings this year, and all positions were acclaimed. For a one-year term the veteran Chrystal Henderson, who’s also the President of the BA Home and School returns for one year, and back for a two-year term are: Miss Jennifer Holmes, Cindy Fairhurst, and Nathalie Legault, and they are joined by an enthusiastic newcomer, Miss Helen Gebhardt. We wish all these parents well in their dedication to the education of all the children.

Beurling Academy Open House

October has become the season of open houses for the LBPSB, and this year BA is second on the list of all the schools. BA’s evening will be held next Thursday, October 4th from 7 pm to 9 pm. This year, BA is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and the building itself having passed the 50-year mark in January 2011, it will be a chance for parents looking towards BA as a secondary school option for their child next school year to take in the vast building, which is still considered a crown jewel in the LBPSB territory.

On the same evening, parents will also be able to attend the IBO info session, as well as take in its various arts programs, the sciences, athletic programs, and to simply walk around and learn about various program options and see some other special areas like robotics on display.

Terry Fox Runs

This is also the season of the Terry Fox runs where schools across Canada continue where Terry left off over 30 years ago in his Marathon of Hope. This week, BA had their run on Tuesday and Verdun Elementary is having their run on Friday of this week. We’ll have more on these two events next edition.

BA Sports

Last, but not least. The GMAA fall season is underway and Beurling Academy is fielding a variety of teams. In soccer, that always popular fall sport, they have boys and girls squads in both the bantam and midget categories. There one team in girls volleyball in the midget section, and in boys touch football, there are teams in the division 1 and 3 juvenile categories and one team in the bantam category. We will update the standings in our next edition.
