BA dance show delights the crowd; LC Literacy & Cultural Expo on April19th
With the music department firmly entrenched with two concerts a year, the dance classes have now established themselves with their annual March show as another event to put into your local performing arts agenda, and, once again, the guiding hand of dance teacher Miss Jessica Mender was in plain evidence.
From the very first dance number performed by Miss Dawn Campbell’s dance crew, we knew we were in for an evening of dancing entertainment and seeing the progress especially of the junior grades. The dance crew’s number was set to a boxing-type theme with clenched fists in a boxing stance. The music for most of the numbers was chic, urban, with gritty street overtones.
The junior grades, Sec 1 and 2, showed their amazing progress and it looked like they have been dancing since their elementary years. The grade 7 class was right on early on with their number called, “Countdown” and the grade 8 students were superb near the end with MJ’s “They don’t really care about us.”
A night like this would not be complete without a mandatory dance number with a Michael Jackson song as a musical backdrop and on that no.1 chart topper “Billie Jean”, it was a solo by Sec 2’s Drake Mallete, formerly of Verdun Elementary, who was one of the star performers under music teacher Miss Jennifer Heyden’s various music events in grades 5 and 6. Drake was superb complete with the solo glove and pulled off the moonwalk with ease.
The last number was performed by 7 couples made up of grade 11 students in a salute to the movie “Dirty Dancing” on that very famous song from the soundtrack, “The Time of my Life.”
So another dance show has come and gone, and we await the next performing arts show which will be Gary Lindner’s spring concert as we await word to see if Canadian rocker Sam Roberts will be available to open the show.
