John Symon candidate for the Green Party in Marquette
Symon grew up on Vancouver Island before backpacking around the world in his early 20s. Retuning to Canada, he decided to live in Montréal and learn French.
Involved in political and environmental issues
Symon has long been involved in political and environmental issues. He was involved with initiating recycling programs, worked for the protection of agricultural lands, and helped put bicycling infrastructure in place.
He is an active member of the community in the Devil’s Hill neighbourhood of the former Ville St. Pierre. The Town of Montréal West recently closed a street there against recommendations from the Montreal fire department and Symon has been working to promote public safety and reopen the street. He is also active in many other ways in his community.
Symon worked many years as editor of the Viking Ski Club in Morin-Heights and sits as treasurer on the Quebec chapter of the Professional Writers’ Association of Canada (PWAC).
His friends perceive him as someone attentive and tenacious, capable of bringing together people from different backgrounds. Symon tries to note all the elements involved in various controversies.
He is also a rare environmentalist to have both completed studies in commerce and earlier in his life to have worked as a logger. Symon’s vision of environmentalism cannot be separated from questions of social justice.
The father of three adolescents, Symon holds degrees in geography from Université de Montréal and in commerce from Concordia (John Molson).
Green Party is the best choice
Symon lives in Lachine and was previously a candidate in the 2009 municipal election under the banner of Projet Montréal.
He believes that the Green Party of Québec is the best choice for promoting the concept of triple bottom lines (people, planet, profit) and working toward a sustainable future.
Symon is a great admirer of Petra Kelly, the founder of Germany’s Green Party.
