Increases Equal to Inflation and Freeze on Local Tax
On receiving their property tax bill at the end of January, LaSalle taxpayers in the residential sector were able to note, on average, that it is up 2.3%–an increase that is equal to the rate of inflation. The property tax rate in LaSalle for 2013 amounts to $0.9090 per $100 of assessment, for all residential buildings with less than 6 housing units (compared to $0.9472 in 2012).
« LaSalle Borough Council’s determination to freeze the local tax and Montréal City Council’s decision not to increase taxes more than the rate of inflation have definitely made it possible to limit the tax burden on LaSalle homeowners, » pointed out Mayor Manon Barbe. « My colleagues and I still believe that the service-related tax is appropriate, as it allows us to provide quality proximity services that LaSalle families value, such as the presence of monitors in the neighbourhood parks, activities and entertainment at parc des Rapides as well as surveillance there, removal of graffiti, the Table d’action en sécurité urbaine, the extension of Borough Hall reception desk hours, many stepped up efforts to keep Borough territory clean, etc.
« Four years ago, we reduced the tax burden by $4.7 million, » mentioned Mayor Barbe as a reminder. « Every year since then, we have succeeded in maintaining the same local tax rate, through our constant efforts to control spending and through the efficiency of our municipal administration. For 2013, we even succeeded in lowering the rate from 6.92 to 6.49 cents per $100 of assessment, which represents a freeze on the burden that this local tax represents for our taxpayers. »
The Mayor also mentioned, as a reminder, the freeze on the basic tax related to water and waste material services, which is billed to all LaSalle homeowners and tenants. « The rate for water services will be maintained at $40 per housing unit for basic consumption and the rate for waste materials services is also remaining unchanged from 2012, at $100 per housing unit. In 2013, LaSalle families therefore don’t have to find even one cent more in their own budgets for these two expense items, » commented Manon Barbe.
And as for non-residential buildings, the property tax rate is $3.7187 per $100 of assessment for 2013. This rate will be higher than LaSalle’s in thirteen boroughs this year. « Owners of commercial and industrial buildings play a very important role in LaSalle’s vitality and economy, and so my colleagues on Council and I are pleased that these owners are benefiting from one of the average tax rates that are among the lowest in the City as a whole, » added Mayor Barbe in her closing remarks.
