An ecocentre by May 2014
Montréal’s executive committee gave the green light to a public call for tenders to build St. Laurent’s new ecocentre in early August. St. Laurent mayor Alan Desousa is delighted with the decision.
« This new ecocentre will enable residents of St. Laurent—and also all those living in the western part of the island—to contribute to the waste recovery efforts on Montréal territory. We are pleased to note that the project is making good progress and that we will soon be able to celebrate the opening of this state-of-the-art building, » he said.
Services for everyone
St. Laurent’s ecocentre will provide residents with a place to safely, easily and ecologically dispose of many waste materials and products that can present a risk to the environment. Waste materials not picked up during regular garbage collections will be accepted such as electric household appliances, bulky waste and hazardous household waste as well as construction and demolition debris.
These materials will then be recovered, recycled or reclaimed in order to give them a second lease on life and thereby prevent large quantities of waste materials from winding up in landfill sites. Residential, industrial and commercial clienteles will be able to take advantage of the services that will be available at the ecocentre.
An ecological building
The ecocentre will be located on rue Sartelon, in the western part of the borough. The structure will consist of a 235-square-metre wing for the offices of waste recovery and recycling advisors, workrooms and a gatehouse to control traffic on the site. The 215-square-metre warehouse will have three very separate sections—shelters for HHW (hazardous household waste), ICT (information and communication technology) waste and the re-use workshop. Outside, there will be a circulation area reserved for clientele, including unloading points and 15 short-term parking spaces.
The project will be submitted for LEED GOLD certification. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2014, so as to have the centre up and running in April 2015.
