September’s Speeding Soapboxes

For the 38th year in a row, kids will be drag racing down a hill in homemade cars while parents cheer and police check for speed. The Annual Soapbox Derby in Dorval will commandeer Fénelon Boulevard for the afternoon and host races for 50 seven to twelve-year-old kids. Started by Jean-Guy Aubry and Pierre Boyer, the family event is now a community institution.

Race day will be Sunday, September 24, from 10 am to 3 pm and host Dorval Main Streets have added some activities and guests to make it a full day of fun for families, including food from Subway, Bar Laitier Nonna, Lory Fleurs, and Café Gourmet.  Bombardier will bring its own soapbox racer and the École de technologie supérieure (ETS) will showcase a prototype vehicle built by their students. Both will offer children hands on engineering activities as well.

All participants will be offered a souvenir, but only one will receive the coveted Gerry’s Cup, a prize for the most creative helmet design in honor of the late long-time volunteer Gerry Aubry. Three winners from last year are participating again this year and will vie for the title of fastest Soapbox once more.
