Official opening of the Telecommunications Museum

On February 27 took place the official opening of the Telecommunications Museum of Pearson Electrotechnology Centre in Lachine. It traces Canada’s telecommunications’ history, from switchboards to cell phones – each in working condition.

“It is always an evolving technology,” commented Richard Oliver, Centre Director. “At one time, you can see both the past, the present and future. Every single item here was once the most advance piece of equipment at the time!” That equipment is now considered obsolete.

Even though the museum is quite small, the amazement is big – with incalculable miles of wires and equipment some had never seen. “I started in a telephone office at Bell in 1962,” remembered Ken Lyons, who gives the tours at the museum, and who helped make this dream a ringing part of history.

From Bell to Nortel, Lyons acquired experience in the field that has been priceless into materializing the museum. With passion driving him, he makes for a great tour guide. “

The Pearson Electrotechnology Centre in Lachine is the only English vocational center dedicated to Electricity, Installation and Repair of Telecommunications Equipment and Computing Support Courses in Quebec.
