Isabelle Morin slams closure of Old Dutch Foods

New Democrat MP Isabelle Morin (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Lachine) criticized Old Dutch Foods for announcing, via a press release issued late in the evening, the closure of their factory in Lachine, leaving 200 workers without jobs.

Many employees only learned the news this morning upon their arrival at work. “It seems to me that after so many years of good and loyal service, these workers deserve better,” said Morin.

In the House of Commons on Wednesday, the MP highlighted the fact that the company’s method of delivery was not unlike the Conservatives’ habit of announcing bad news in the middle of night. “Let’s just say the example came from above,” indicated Ms. Morin.

“Once again, many workers in their fifties are losing their jobs. It’s never easy to think about finding a new career and a new job so close to retirement,” said the MP.

Ms. Morin called on the Conservative government to work with the factory managers as well as the government of Quebec in order to explore all possible avenues to preserve the jobs.

The MP invites all affected workers to contact her constituency office if they have difficulty collecting their EI benefits. “Conservative cuts often lead to undue delays in the process,” she concluded.
