Vanier College athletes study hard and win big

Two Vanier College athletes were honoured among 36 students by the Alliance Sports-Études on May 31. Laurence Fortin-Haines and Mikella Lefebvre-Oatis were awarded $1,500 and $1,000, respectively, for their academic and athletic achievements.

Fortin-Haines is a softball player for the Quebec Rebelles and studies science at Vanier. Her bursary was awarded by the Major Junior Hockey League of Quebec.

For track and field athlete, Lefebvre-Oatis, the bursary was a drop in the bucket compared to her $60,000 scholarship to UCLA, where the social science student will begin in the fall.

Lefebvre-Oatis has was the 2012 Canadian Midget Champion and Female Youth Athlete of the Year in 2015. She’s competed on Team Canada in the World Youth Championships and won gold at the 2015 Junior National Championships and Youth National Championships.

This year there was a record number of bursaries awarded through the Alliance Sports-Études, with a total value of $169,000 in 116 scholarships.
